Saanth and Ghari Puja
This ceremony happens a day before the big wedding and entails a series of traditions which starts with seven married women pouring oil onto the bride’s head. That’s right, after the groom being marinated in haldi, it’s time for the tarka. After this, the bride will attempt to break an earthen pot and the shoes she used to do this will be worn on her big wedding day. Knowing the bride, that little earthen pot should be terrified.
The pot kicking is then followed by a puja. It doesn’t end there though as it’s time for the bride to be adorned with bangles. 21 red and white bangles, to be specific. Then begins the fun part. Tiny umbrella shaped ornaments called kaleerey are tied to the bangles. The bride then has to dangle the kaleerey above the heads of all the single ladies present. If any kaleerey fall on anyone’s head, don’t fret, it’s not dangerous, it’s actually said that this lucky girl will be the next to be married. So, it’s almost the equivalent to the western tradition of throwing the bouquet by the bride.
